The Chestnut Story

American Chestnut, known for its beauty, stability and durability (due to a high tannin – natural preservative – content) was used in the United States for flooring, railroad ties, telephone poles, beams and fences until it was brought to extinction by a blight disease in the 1950’s.     European Chestnut (also known as Sweet Chestnut) has been used for many of the same applications in Europe for hundreds of years.    Being separated by an Ocean kept European Chestnut isolated from the disease that destroyed the American species.
